India Urged to Strengthen Cyber Security After 373 Government Websites Hacked

An Indian parliamentary house panel has called upon the government to bolster the cyber security measures of central and state government websites following revelations that 373 websites fell victim to hacking between January 2018 and September 2023. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) disclosed this information to the parliamentary committee on communications and information technology.

India Urged to Strengthen Cyber Security After 373 Government Websites Hacked

According to MeitY, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) recorded a total of 110, 54, 59, 42, 50, and 58 incidents of website hacking in central ministries/departments and state government organizations during the years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 (up to September), respectively.

Reacting to these findings, the house panel presented a report in the parliament titled “Digital Payment and Online Security Measures for Data Protection” on February 8. It urged the government to reinforce critical digital infrastructure.

Furthermore, the committee highlighted that some government offices were using outdated software on laptops and computers, rendering them susceptible to cyber-attacks.

Despite MeitY issuing regular guidelines on ensuring the cyber security of government cyber infrastructure, the committee stressed the importance of adhering to these guidelines and recommended the ministry to update the entire government infrastructure concerning cyber threat management. The committee expects to be informed about the actions taken in this regard.

India constitutes 13% of cyber-attacks in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, positioning it as one of the top three most targeted countries by nation-state actors, as per the report.

Moreover, Microsoft cautioned that hackers were employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for cyber attacks. The report suggested embracing Responsible AI practices to maintain user trust, privacy, and long-term benefits, citing examples such as AI-powered cyber defense in Ukraine countering Russian attacks.

Kim Jong Un oversees submarine-launched cruise missile tests, North Korea says
Kim Jong Un Supervises Test Firings of New Cruise Missiles Amid Rising Tensions

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test firings of new cruise missiles designed for submarine launches. The tests come as part of North Korea’s efforts to enhance its naval capabilities and build a nuclear-armed navy to counter perceived external threats. This move follows heightened tensions in the region, with North Korea conducting multiple weapons demonstrations amid strained relations with the United States, South Korea, and Japan.

Missile Launch and Submarine Development

The official newspaper Rodong Sinmun published photos of at least two Pulhwasal-3-31 missiles fired separately. The missiles, tested from land-based launches last week, created grayish-white clouds as they broke the water surface and ascended at an angle of around 45 degrees, possibly indicating launches from torpedo launch tubes. The missiles flew for over two hours before accurately hitting an island target.

Analysis and Response

South Korea’s military detected the missile launches and is analyzing the data, including the possibility of North Korea exaggerating flight times. While North Korea has been testing various missiles for submarine launches, building a fleet of reliable submarines capable of carrying out nuclear strikes would require significant time, resources, and technological advancements.

Kim’s Strategic Goals

Kim Jong Un expressed satisfaction with the test results and issued important tasks to advance the “nuclear weaponization of the navy” and expand its sphere of operation. These goals are deemed crucial considering the current situation and perceived future threats. Kim also received briefings on efforts to develop a nuclear-powered submarine and other advanced naval vessels.

Challenges and Realities

While North Korea aims to build a nuclear-armed navy, experts emphasize the challenges the nation faces in achieving this goal without external assistance. The recent unveiling of a submarine in September, the “Hero Kim Kun Ok,” raised doubts about its operational readiness. South Korea’s military suggested that the vessel appeared incapable of normal operation despite having launch tubes for missiles.

Escalating Tensions on the Korean Peninsula

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have heightened in recent months as Kim accelerates weapons development and issues provocative threats of nuclear conflict with the U.S. and its allies. The U.S., South Korea, and Japan have responded by expanding military exercises and refining deterrence strategies to counter North Korea’s evolving missile capabilities.

Recent Developments and Strategy

The cruise missile launches follow the January 14 test firing of North Korea’s first solid-fuel intermediate-range ballistic missile. Kim’s efforts to expand the arsenal of weapons capable of overwhelming missile defenses in the region and targeting remote U.S. locations in the Pacific, including Guam, underscore the evolving dynamics in the region.

As North Korea continues its weapons testing, the international community closely monitors developments, assessing the implications of Kim Jong Un’s strategic goals and the potential for increased tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The recent tests highlight North Korea’s determination to enhance its naval capabilities amid geopolitical uncertainties.

The PSG head coach insinuated reluctance to oppose Mbappe’s desires

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) coach Luis Enrique has acknowledged his helplessness in persuading Kylian Mbappe to sit out the match against the sixth-tier team Revel.

“Why not give Kylian Mbappe a rest? He wants to play, and at that point, the rest of us don’t have much to say. You just have to watch him play and enjoy it,” Enrique responded when asked about playing Mbappe for the full 90 minutes in the 9-0 victory over Revel in the French Cup round of 32 on January 7.

Enrique also stated that Mbappe is a player who speaks more on the field than the coach does. He asserted that when players like him perform, everyone benefits, including the team, the audience, and even the opponents.

In the 9-0 win against Revel, Mbappe scored three goals. The 25-year-old forward increased his season tally to 25 goals in 24 matches, bringing his total for PSG to 237 goals in 284 appearances and his overall club career tally to 268 goals in 356 matches.

Typically, when facing significantly weaker opponents, top-ranking teams often use their bench players. On January 6, in the Copa del Rey round of 16 match against Arandina, Real Madrid left their entire La Liga starting lineup on the bench. However, against Revel, Enrique still fielded many stars such as Mbappe, Kolo Muani, Goncalo Ramos, and Marco Asensio.

Enrique took charge of PSG at the beginning of the 2023-2024 season. PSG is leading Ligue 1 with a five-point gap, progressing to the round of 16 in the French Cup, round of 8 in the Champions League, and winning the French Super Cup. However, their performance in the Champions League has not been truly convincing. PSG finished second in Group F with eight points in six matches. Enrique’s team only advanced on goal difference over third-placed Milan.

Before joining PSG, Enrique won a Champions League, a treble, and two La Liga titles with Barcelona. With the Spanish national team, he reached the Euro 2021 semifinals and the Nations League 2021 final. Enrique parted ways with Spain after a 0-3 defeat to Morocco in the penalty shootout of the World Cup 2022 round of 16.
